1. Requip XL will be coming out soon so BI had to come up with Mirapex once daily SR.2. Once daily dosing is probably better for our Parkinson's patients as this will provide continuous dopaminergic stimulation with less fluctuation.

It's still too early to tell, let's see how things go. The article mentions medications that slow down the progression of Alzheimer's, but this is already what the current medications are doing. We need medications that can reverse the process. In early stages of Alzheimer's I've seen some patients on Aricept acheive this, only to slide back in about 5 years.

Good prelim data but need to wait for further data

1. There is a significant difference among relapse rates btw patients on Avonex vs Fingolimod. 2. Need to see what the dropout rate was and why, what side effects occurred with Fingolimod. 3. MS is a chronic disorder thus need long term data in future.

The trial will go well, but what are we trying to achieve?

I think the trial will go well, but what are we trying to achieve? Remember this medication first came out in Russia, and although been proven(most likely) superior to placebo, the big question is 1. Will it be more effective than the current meds here in the US(Aricept, Namenda, etc)? I have seen a fair number of Alzheimer pts who on Aricept have IMPROVEMENT of mini mental status exam scores and functionality if taken early. Dimebon will have to prove to be superior to these meds to have any consideration at all for pts to switch to this med. 2. Another factor(determining which product will have the majority of Alzheimer's pts, which number will grow astronomically in the next several decades) is COST: soon Aricept, Namenda will become generic; in this population(retired, on limited financial sources and some in the infamous doughnut hole) it would be hard(and unethical) to switch a pt from a cheaper, generic med to an expensive, brand one if effects are comparable.

Growth hormone is not the answer.

1. I agree, growth hormone is not the answer. 2. ALS is due to progressive degeneration of motor neurons, specifically. I don't think a lack of growth hormone is the primary cause.
