Presdient Obama creates health reform office | fcw.com

The article posted in the Federal Computer Week web site on April 8th speaks of President Obama's creation of an Office of Health Reform. By creating this office within the White House, it shows Obama's dedication to making real change within healthcare to improve quality, decrease costs and increase access. The article states that the role of this person will be to break down barriers that occur across both the financial and health sectors within congress and other areas of government. By specifically naming both health and financial committees and governmental entities, it shows the understanding of the tie between health and wealth. Few others have shown this level of understanding regarding the overlap of the two issues.

Will the Adoption of Health Information Technology Really Improve Healthcare

Stimulating the Adoption of Health Information Technology | content.nejm.org

ARRA makes financial support for the implementation of health information technology available to healthcare entities including both physciians and hospitals. The problem is whether the amount available is enough to create movement within the healthcare industry. There is no clear definition of "meaningful use" but in order for physicians to be reimbursed they must meet this standard. The vagueness of this requirement will create yet another barrier to adoption  By requiring a "certified" EMR, those that passed the legislation understand the need for some level of interoperability within the healthcare system. This is very important to meet the end goals of adoption of health IT and quality improvement of healthcare. The NEJM article states that the goal of this legislation in not the number of healthcare entities that adopt technology but the improvement of the US healthcare system.Neither the legislation or this article help to give us a clear path to the ultimate goal
