Why Do so Few Hospitals have EMR

March 30, 2009

U.S. Hospitals Slow to Adopt E-Records | online.wsj.com

A recent survey found that less than 7 % of US Hospitals have adopted EMR. Even with the new federal stimulus package of incentives the cost of EMR systems is very high. These systems require monthly maintenance fees and continuous staff to fix IT problems. The cost of a paper records system is zero. Another factor is the recent cases of computer hackers accessing patient's medical records including personal data such as social security numbers , date of birth, and addresses. This has already happened at several institutions that use EMR and those institutions may now get sued by angry patients. Many patients are concerned and do not want to see physicians with EMR systems because they are concerned that personal information may be shared with insurance companies  such as chronic health conditions( Diabetes, HIV, Mental Illness). This information may be used in the future to deny Health and Life Insurance policies.

Psychotherapy may save money

September 11, 2008

National Trends in Psychotherapy by Office-Based Psychiatrists | archpsyc.ama-assn.org

Unfortunately, many insurance payors do not realize that allowing psychotherapy visits may save the money in the long run by reducing the need for much more costly Inpatient psychiatric treatment. I find that my patients who receive psychotherapy are much less likely to miss work and much less likely to be hospitalized. Sincerely, Gregg Friedman MD
