The "Peace Pipeline" between Iran,Pakistan,India was always in doubt of fructifying. Given the geopolitical realities of the region, it is well for India to stay out of it. India has already gone ahead with sourcing supplies from others. It is also more actively pursuing exploration under the NELP, encouraged by one of the largest gas discoveries in the Krishna Godavari basin in the bay of Bengal. There was no real expectation of the Peace Pipeline coming through, so this will not impact India.

Grid connectivity requires large centralized investments and implementation issues in populous areas where "Right of Way" and already scarce land will be impediments.Adopting the right incentives can galvanize the private sector to provide clean renewable energy in quick time to the power starved residents of rural India.

These kind of disputes and allegations are bound to continue as long as the Gas pricing is government regulated and not governed by a market based price discovery.

Off shore exploration in Bangladesh can be a risky proposition

Bangladesh has granted exploration rights to Conoco Philips and Tullow oil in three disputed offshore blocks in the Bay of Bengal. The oil companies are expected to spend about $160 millions exploring the area. Given the lack of agreement and understanding between Bangladesh, Myanmar & India regarding the ownership of the territory involved , this can be a somewhat risky proposition. There has been some tension between Bangladesh & Myanmar in the recent past on this very issue.

Cairn Energy started pumping its First Production of oil from its oil fields in Barmer district of Rajasthan last week. The production from the Barmer basin is from 3 oil fields, namely, Mangala,Bhagyam& Aishwarya(MBA). The MBA reserve is estimated at more than 1 billion barrels including 300 million barrels of EOR oil. This is truly significant for India since this the first major oil field brought into production by the private sector in India and will hopefully spur greater participation.

Petronet LNG recently signed a 20 year agreement with Gorgon LNG for purchase of 1.5 Million tons per annum of LNG. The cargoes will be received at Petronet LNG's planned terminal at Kochi, South western India. This is unlikely to have any major impact on existing Indian natural gas players like Reliance Industries. Petronet LNG has been promoted by GAIL in order to ensure long term Gas availability for it gas transmission pipeline networks.

As the size of the thin film solar PV manufacturing plants become bigger, the economies of scale will kick in and make the cost of grid connected solar PV power comparable to fossil fuel based power.There are currently several technologies being actively pursued : Poly crystalline Silicon, Amorphous Silicon, Cadmium Telluride, CIGS are the leading ones.
