Google has at last announced their intentions to move into the operating system space, setting their sites directly on Microsoft. Google is cutting off Microsoft first in the netbook space, the one area of the PC market that has been showing healthy growth. In time, Google's Chrome OS will force Microsoft to change how they compete in their bread-and-butter corporate Windows / Office market as well.

Rather than increasing competitive pressure on Google, the Yahoo / Microsoft deal may actually prove to be the best thing that has ever happened to Google. Microsoft is crashing into Yahoo at ramming speed, and the collision will sink or cripple both of them - leaving Google the only battleship afloat. Microsoft and Yahoo will both be paralyzed waiting for this deal close, one way or the other. If Microsoft does succeed, it will be at least a year before the merged company is working efficiently. And a year in Internet time might as well be an eternity.
