Such work was traditionally performed internally but is now one of many stages of development being outsourced. This follows similar trends in research, where pharma companies are forging external relationships. We question where the pharma industry is headed and how much of its core business will remain in-house.

Medical tourism is popular already but many of those seeking care come from countries with less well developed services and tend to visit Western hospitals, rather than the reverse. There remains a need for basic health care services in Ghana (and elsewhere) but this does not seem to cater for any but the affluent.

H1N1 is a deadly strain of flu that has caused the White House to declare an emergency. The CDC says that instead of having 40 million doses of vaccines available there are only 28 - 30 million. On Friday an anti-viral was given emergency use authorization which allows it to be used even though it is not yet approved. This raises hope for Sinovac which has an H1N1 vaccine ready.
