U.S. Cement Consumption down through October 2008

According to the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) cement consumption declined 14.1% during the first 10 months of 2008 compared to the same period in 2007.  All regions have experienced declines from 2007. Cement consumption will be slower for the balance of 2008 due to weak construction spending overall. Of the nine regions, five have declines above the national average: East North Central, East South Central, Mountain, Pacific and South Atlantic.

Pressure continues to reimpose the mining ban in the Dade County Florida Lake Belt. The Lake Belt accounts for nearly 50% of limestone produced in the State of Florida.

Aggregates Volumes First Quarter 2008

Data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported that crushed stone and sand & gravel (aggregates) volumes declined 13.7% in the first quarter of 2008 compared to the same quarter in 2007. (The report does not include Alaska, Hawaii, Vermont, Maine, Delaware, Rhode Island and North Dakota). Volumes declined in all states with  the exception of New Jersey +9.0%, New York +8.8%, Colorado +19.9%, Wyoming +3.0%, Massachusetts +5.7%, West Virginia +9.0%, Iowa +5.7%, Kansas +68.2%, Nebraska +20.9%, Oklahoma +15.4% and Texas +14.7%.

On May 9th A 10 month mining ban on rock mining in the Lake Belt Region of Dade County Florida was lifted by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta by a vote of 2-1.
