Ozurdex (Allergan) is now on the market and available for ophthalmologists to treat patients with retinal vascular occlusions (RVO).While the technology and treatment may be sound, there may be significant hurdles to overcome from a billing standpoint.Ozurdex may follow the same fate as Lucentis (Genetech).  It must compete with a much cheaper drug which has comparable efficacy.

Ozurdex is the first biodegradable drug delivery system for the eye.  Approved for retinal vein occlusions, the off-label use will ensure wider use than the FDA approval.  Ozudex may supplant intravitreal injections and the novel technology may be useful in treatment of macular degeneration and diabetics.

An eye drop that stabilizes the most common form of AMD is encouraging.  The ability for an eye drop to be effective is curious.  Historically it has been difficult to get any medication effectively delivered to the retina via topical medications.  The development of geographic atrophy is very, very slow and it is surprising that a positive trend can be noted in such a short time.

Walmart's plan to introduce EMR to their demographic is bold, but does not address the key problems of cost, in dollars and man hours, and poor appreciation of computers by the physican community.  EMR has a bad connotation amongst physicians, it is a "black box" that is expensive to implement.  Most small offices work rather efficiently.  Large offices are so inefficient that present EMR systems do offer an advantage.
